The Agbo forest was declared a reservation on 4th May, 1974. It covers 4,700 hectares of land, and stretches across 43 kilometers. 29km is virgin. We have two rivers- Yafo and Ntretre running through the forest. The remaining 14 kilometers is human-made.
There are seven agents in charge of the forest. We are in the south East of Ivory Coast and quite close Ghana.
Barry Callebaut partnered with us since last year to help rejuvenate the forest but due to some challenges planting began this year. Barry Callebaut is taking care of 300 hectares, and it has to be done within 5 years. The target is to plant 60 hectares a year.
This forest creates a lot of jobs for the people around here. Etic Wood is going to keep these people for at least 5 years.
Another advantage is the climatic benefits the forest creates. The farmers around here will get more rain.
We’re looking forward to other potential benefits such as Barry Callebaut building more schools here, maternity clinics, etc.
All the people here are farmers, and they have organized themselves into very effective cooperatives.
